Teaching AcroYoga at Drama Arts Chula

I was thrilled when Peevara, the external theatre instructor, and a friend from parkour reached out to me to teach acrobatics for the Drama Arts Chula performing arts course he’s designing.

The subject, titled “Selected Topics Drama,” is an elective within the Drama Arts Chula performing arts curriculum. This year, the course is specially tailored to offer students unique opportunities in learning stage combat, acrobatics, parkour, and magic. I was honored to share three sessions as part of this course, and here are some insights into my teaching approach.

Week 1 : The focus of the first session was to bring everyone together through group exercises and to learn the basics of the movements. We started with introductions and positive affirmations, then progressed to group exercises that helped build trust and communication. We learned some fun counterbalance poses and the three roles in AcroYoga poses: base, flyer, and spotter.

Week 2 : In the second session, our focus was on communication through body language, with a particular emphasis on understanding the roles of leaders and followers. We delved into the technical aspects of bone stacking and the tension necessary for acrobatic basics. At the end of the class, we engaged in constructing structured poses based on creative ideas within both small and large groups.

Week 3 : The final session served as a revision for the technical part while also introducing some challenging ones for students to explore their abilities. We began with reflection talks, allowing everyone to share their thoughts and ideas prompted by the cards they selected. We then continued to refine basic acro techniques and introduced some inversion poses to add a challenge and extra fun to the session.

Sharing my AcroYoga experience with university students is one of my motivations in my work. I’ve always wanted to connect and share with young individuals, especially those who engage in movement and art forms .

My mission for this opportunity was to deliver not just knowledge but also to provide a space for everyone to explore more about themselves. I value this opportunity because I believe AcroYoga is an excellent practice that brings people together as a team, supported by self-encouragement. My mission is to provide not just knowledge but also space for everyone to explore more about themselves and to experience and appreciate these qualities.

Thank YOU once again for another wonderful teaching experience! We brought each other so much positivity and encouragement in this short time together. Sharing failures, laughter, and success made it a truly enriching experience for me as both a teacher and a learner. It’s incredibly powerful, and I’m grateful to have been a part of those moments!

  1. This is my first time I have studied AcroYoga. Throughout 3 sessions studied with P’May, I got lots of great experiences. P’May is so sweet, nice and talented teacher. She pushed me step out of my comfort zone. Always encourage, support and give me positive energy. Thank you so much for teaching us.

  2. It was the most fun and the least stress full yoga class that I’ve ever attended. Even though it wasn’t easy we made it through, many thanks to May who made us feel connected to our self and each others. I’m so glad I once experienced acro yoga and I will definitely do it again in the future!
